Let go, and see what happens!

At a company where I once worked, the day after the annual holiday party held a nasty tradition. Everyone would punish the tardiness of the last to arrive by trashing their cubicle. With the exception of the pregnant, no one was exempt from this team-building exercise in cruelty. Even the president of the company had his office filled with wadded paper, rubbish and balloons.

I’ll never forget what one of my friends said, while attempting to construct a reverse pyramid of 9 stacked stools, using only one yard of masking tape. As we braced the structure from opposite ends, he shouted “Let go and let’s see what happens!” Now, I wouldn’t say that I’m risk averse, but part of your job as a retoucher is to seek out, and eradicate anything that draws attention away from the subject of the image. On the other hand, sometimes you’ll want to create a noisy design. You can simply redirect your obsessive tendencies towards the attractive scattering of visual trash. What fun indeed!
